General Class Resources

Below are some additional resources to help you better understand my expectations for your performance in my classes. I am not only interested in you developing a command of the substantive material (facts, figures, theories, and so forth), but I am even more concerned that you learn to think about and use these ideas to better understand yourself and the social worlds in which we live.
My Expectations for Thinking and Communicating Sociologically

The study of sociology should develop our abilities to think and communicate rigorously, empirically, critically, and creatively about ourselves and the social worlds we inhabit. These documents lay out my general expectations for thinking and communicating in a manner that is both self-aware and appropriate for your intended audience.

APA STYLE GUIDES

I expect that you will render citations, quotations, and references in APA Style, since it is probably the most common style guide in the social and behavioral sciences. I have given guidelines for the rest of your written style that is similar to (but not exactly) APA style. Unless otherwise noted, you will NOT include title pages, abstracts, appendices, or footnotes in your written work for this course. You may include tables or figures according to APA style guidelines, where necessary. The following external links will help you with enough of the APA style basics to complete your written assignments. Not all reference formats are considered appropriate for social science writing, so ask me if you are familiar with another style that you wish to use instead and I will tell you whether it is acceptable.
